AI Financial Disruption
In this video, Jean Maurice Henkel shares insights on the economic disruption of artificial intelligence and its potential threat to Dutch household finances.
Research suggests that AI agentic systems will soon outperform combined human-AI efforts on most cognitive tasks. This rapid advancement allows agentic AI to absorb entire layers of white-collar work, threatening to create a K-shaped economic distribution where capital owners capture the financial upside while the middle class bears the losses.
Using data from the DNB Household Survey and CBS, Jean Maurice maps out a systemic chain reaction: job loss triggers credit default risk, eroding savings wealth and collapsing consumer spending. In the Netherlands, where household debt stands at 180% of gross income, even minor disruptions in expected future earnings can trigger a drop in house prices, directly undermining the primary asset of Dutch families.
To mitigate these risks, he emphasizes the urgent need for cross-sector collaboration across academia, industry, government, and civil society
