Mompreneurship: How Parental Leave Define Women’s Decision to Start a Business

“Welcoming a child is one of the most exciting and irreversible changes in life, and it demands a lot of adaptation. For business owners, work and family tend to blur, so this change in the household also affects the business”. In this video, Pomme Theunissen looks at the impact of motherhood on entrepreneurship, known as “mompreneurship.”

With her research team, she focuses on the generosity of parental leave, meaning the time allocated to care for children in the early years after birth. Generosity has two elements: how long the leave lasts (time) and how much money is paid each month during it (money).

Their main finding is that time matters more than money. When women get more time to rethink their occupation and readapt to this major life change, their probability of becoming an entrepreneur increases.
